Description

Duckweed (Lemna minor) is one of the most common and versatile floating plants used in aquariums. Known for its rapid growth and ability to form dense mats, Duckweed is ideal for providing shade, covering the water surface, and creating a natural, overgrown look. It’s a fast-growing plant that can quickly cover the entire water surface, making it excellent for reducing light intensity and controlling algae growth by blocking excessive light.

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, Duckweed is an effective natural filter. It absorbs excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates from the water, helping to maintain better water quality and prevent algae blooms. However, it can grow too quickly in tanks with high nutrient levels, so regular thinning may be necessary to prevent it from overtaking your tank.

Duckweed thrives in moderate to high light and can be grown in both low-tech and high-tech aquariums. It can float freely on the water surface or be gently tethered to a surface if desired.

Detailed Care Requirements

  • Temperature: 22°C – 28°C (72°F – 82°F)
  • Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3 – 8 dKH
  • General Hardness (GH): 4 – 12 dGH
  • CO₂: Optional – CO₂ supplementation will promote faster growth but is not necessary.
  • Substrate: No substrate required – it floats on the water surface.
  • Water pH Value: 5.5 – 7.5
  • Fertilizer: Duckweed thrives in nutrient-rich water, but be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to rapid overgrowth.
  • Care Input: Low to medium – requires some maintenance to control growth.
  • Maintenance Difficulty: Easy – Regular thinning is necessary to keep Duckweed under control.
  • Light Provision: Moderate to high light (approx. 1 – 2 watt per litre) – Needs adequate light for optimal growth but may slow down in low light conditions.

Why Choose Duckweed for Your Aquarium?

Duckweed is a simple yet effective plant for aquarists looking to add natural beauty while maintaining water quality. Its fast growth rate and ability to absorb excess nutrients make it an excellent tool for keeping your tank clean. Whether you want to add shade, reduce light intensity, or create a lush, floating carpet, Duckweed is an affordable and easy-to-care-for plant that’s perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

With minimal care and maintenance, Duckweed can thrive in a variety of setups, and it’s especially beneficial in aquariums with high nutrient levels or algae problems.
